Just two items occupied our time:

Waste Management

Two meetings in July will take this as their theme.

  • Friends of the Earth, on 11 July at the Friends Centre, Ship Street, and
  • Dump the Dump, on 19 July, have Norman Baker MP, Somebody van Steinis (incineration expert) plus representatives from Energos (designing waste gasification plant for Isle of Wight Council) at a meeting whose venue is yet to be decided.

We sought ways to keep waste management on the agenda now that planning permission has been granted for the Hollingdean transfer station, and the Newhaven incinerator. The Councils' commitment to a long contract of providing waste for the incinerator in conflict with the aim of reducing the amount of waste being created seemed to offer an opportunity. We felt in need of more detailed information.

Nature and purpose of network

We discussed the nature and purpose of the Environment Network. Only three bodies had responded to the several e-mails sent by Kate McGrory - two saying they could not attend, one offering to take notes. The original idea of the network was to allow groups to share ideas and information, not to establish another regular meeting. We wondered if the network could find a role in getting co-operation on campaigns across groups. Perhaps each member body could submit a brief summary of its current concerns, plans and hopes, so that common ground can be identified and built on.
