Priority 1
The LSP, PSB and family of partnerships need to develop an action-focused plan which tackles barriers to change by focusing on the key priorities set out in this position statement. This must have clear and achievable objectives
Priority 2
A task group / stakeholder workshop / conference could be convened to pull together and lead on development and implementation of a list of achievable and affordable local actions
Priority 3
The CVS should encourage practical actions for which individuals/organisations can take responsibility e.g. turning computers off
Priority 4
The CVS should lead on developing a 5-10 point action plan (or accredited scheme) detailing basic steps all CVS organisations could take to reduce their carbon footprint. This action plan should be promoted and supported across the partnerships leading to practice change on the ground
Priority 5
A longer-term strategy detailing centralised objectives linked to the community strategy should be developed as a second phase following an action plan around climate change
Priority 6
The Sustainability Commission should be developed into a strategic partnership which would take a lead on implementation of an action plan around climate change.
Priority 7
The CVS should prioritise promoting its unique ability to actively promote and support 'on-the-ground' eco projects of many kinds. The CVS needs to enable individuals/groups to access funding streams/support agencies necessary to facilitate concrete action within and by the community
Priority 8
Community buildings should have more capacity and support to make positive environmental contributions and limit climate change
Priority 9
The activity of the CVSF Environment network should be increased in order that groups can work together
The CVS should promote its role in providing advice /education/information
The CVS requires an environmental audit service / small business advice with a package of common sense info, affordable solutions & support
Ecological community buildings, the CVSF Environment Network and other CVS organisations could provide guidance and model good practice
An online discussion board could facilitate debate within and between sectors, and should be developed
A priority for the CVS is ensuring that we are supported to provide accurate and reliable information, available in simple formats for individuals and groups
The statutory and private sectors should work in partnership with the CVS to initiate culture change around environmental issues
Small and medium enterprises in the CVS should be able to access the same advice and support around climate change as small businesses
Prioritise an environmental audit of the sector, the results of which would lead to support and resources for the sector to improve
CVS organisations need to be resourced to share knowledge and success with one another, through sharing examples of good practice in areas of influence and control
The CVS should play more of a key role in campaigning to raise awareness of the issues
The impacts of climate change on health and links to fuel poverty should be explored
Community eco-projects and initiatives which are closer to on the ground action which can help CVS groups to achieve their environmental aims should be promoted and supported
Culture, consumerism, bad practice (e.g. not allowing bikes on trains) and the media's role in getting the message to local organisations should be challenged across all sectors
The CVS should play a greater role in lobbying the private sector and members of strategic partnerships
The CVS closer to the people and therefore closer to the action - this should be promoted in order to attract funding from the statutory sector
The CVS' priorities to campaign on regarding climate change include reducing water use - across all sectors, better recycling /reducing waste - e.g. paper, reducing emissions (energy use) - buildings and transport, and increasing sustainable energy use
Reforms and positive changes in the tourist industry in Brighton are needed, for example the use of water and facilities
The CVS should play a key role in encouraging other sectors to take responsibility regarding climate change, and in challenging bad practice in other sectors
Priority 10
The CVS should prioritise education and learning for children around climate change and other environmental issues
